Explore the weird world of ice and darkness in Lofthellir lava cave in the Mývatn district in North Iceland. An excellent underworld exploration day tour from Akureyri.
Trip difficulty 2+ out of 5 possible. Easy.
In this tour we visit Lofthellir lava cave where the underground will be explored. Our destination is a cave that seasonally boasts the greatest natural ice sculptures currently known in an Icelandic lava cave.
We drive straight to Lake Mývatn and from there along the unique volcanic crater Hverfell, through the crater row of Lúdentarborgir to the roots of Mt. Hvannfell. After about 20 minutes walk across a lava field, we reach the Lofthellir lava cave. At least one hour is spent inside the cave, observing this unbelievable natural phenomenon. We make a short stop in the village of Reykjahlíð by Lake Mývatn before returning to Akureyri.
Optional stop at the
Mývatn Nature Baths can be arranged.
