Alpine Iceland - From Skaftafell

Climb the Hrútfjallstindar alpine peaks on the Vatnajökull Glacier

Mountain climbing trip from Skaftafell.

Height: 1875 m.

Terrain: We travel from sea level following the Skaftafell Glacier´s melt path. Into the alpine tundra on the flanks of mt. Hafrafell before entering the snow covered glacier that surrounds Hrútfjallstindar on this Icelands most scenic of climbs

Average ascend time: 8-10 hours. Total average trip time: 11-15 hours.

Height gain: ~1750 meters

Trip difficulty: 4+ of 5 possible. Very Demanding

When it comes to big alpine routes and impressive peaks in Iceland the upper reaches of the Svínafellsjökull in Skaftafell is the undisputed master of ceremony. There the Hrútfjallstindar peaks rise valiantly up between the Svínafellsjökull and the Skaftafellsjökull and the four shapely peaks range from 1756 meters to 1875. These impressive spires offer some great challenging, non-technical, to extremely difficult alpine climbing.

Along the way and from the top the view is magnificent, on bluebird days it is certainly one of the great mountain views the world has to offer. Below the lush Skaftafell oasis and enormous outlet glaciers stretched out towards the black sand beaches and the North Atlantic. To the North the Vatnajökull glacier ice cap, Europe’s largest is also revealed with its millennia old ice coat and beautiful peaks jutting up from its flanks. Our standard ascent is one that requires no technical alpine climbing but participants have to be in very good excellent physical condition.

We offer more demanding alpine climbing up on request and on private guiding basis. Contact us for the South face and All 4 summits (April - June)
