From Bangarara

Our day tour was delayed by a blow out but then we were off to Sólheimajökull for our walk.

My clothing for the day had been carefully planned out as I feel the cold, so I was fitted out with: thermal vest and leggings, thin fleece, trackie bottoms, thick fleece, waterproof trousers, waterproof outer jacket... then socks, waterproof socks, leather walking boots, fleece hat and thermal waterproof gloves. This turned out to be just right for the glacier.

When we arrived at the car park facing the glacier we were then fitted out with a harness, helmet, crampons and ice picks. The crampons only took a short while to get used to, taking on a more 'John Wayne' walk and we set out on to the glacier. After the initial hail flurry that attacked us, the weather was generally fine and we could see a good stretch uncovered by cloud.

Next we tried our hands at ice-climbing, with my volunteering to go first. Armed with two picks and my trust crampons (and thankfully a sturdy rope secured and held by our guide Ingó.) I took my first swing. It was easier than I expected to get a good hold with the picks, the difficulties lay in getting a decent footing, but fairly quickly I was up near where the rope was tethered and it was time to lean back and walk back down the ice face.

We each had a turn and then took a further walk on the glacier before turning back to the bus for a very welcome sandwich and drink.

Ingó was a great guide, giving us information along the drive about the volcanic eruptions, introducing us to a little Icelandic music and making sure we were safe on the glacier. He also made sure we had some great chocolate cookies while we were up there!

Do not forget your camera!

Behind the Mountains Super Jeep Safari - 4 days

Multi Trip: 4 Day Driver Guided Super Jeep Safari to the Central Highlands, River Rafting, Glacier Hiking, Ice Climbing & Hot Spring Bathing

Fjallabak literally means “behind the mountains”, here hidden behind Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull lies a vast untouched wilderness like no other in the world. Here glaciers reach for the skies, deep blue mountain lakes fill steep valleys with sharp green peaks on all sides. Lost hot springs in secluded valleys far, far away from civilization will relax and calm you as you take in the spectacular views.

After the Golden Circle and river rafting we will visit the famous Landmannalaugar hot springs where we will hike in the colorful rhyolite mountains and bathe in the natural pool. Next is the magnificent Syðra Fjallabak drive to the Strútur hut and a hike to the amazing Strútslaug natural hot springs. We will drive along side Mýrdalsjökull glacier, crossing many rivers and enjoying breathtaking unforgettable views of Iceland. After stopping at Eldgjá volcanic rift we descend down to the Skaftá glacier river, which we will follow up to Langisjór highland lake. This secluded lake is rimmed in by steep, lush green volcanoes and at the end of the lake the biggest glacier in Europe, Vatnajökull glacier, rises up. By following a secret track that lies through the lake we get to shores where the beauty is staggering, the seclusion is complete, and you will never see anything like this anywhere else in the world. At the end of the lake, by Vatnajökull, we ascend the Breiðbak mountain range where we will have an unobstructed view of the whole area. At last we drive south to the coastal town of Vík í Mýrdal on road number 1. Following the south coast towards Reykjavík we will stop at Reynisdrangar cliffs, Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss waterfalls, go glacier hiking and ice climbing on Sólheimajökull and drive the black lava sand beaches with the surf just meters away.
