Day 1: Golden Circle – Snorkeling – Drumbó Basecamp
Head east out of town and meet us for a unique snorkeling adventure in the ravine between the continents. You will experience the amazing visibility of the clear water within the Thingvellir National Park – according to reputable diving magazines a divesite rated among the worlds 10 best. After the trip discover the surroundings of Thingvellir independently before heading further to the world famous Geysir area and the breathtaking waterfall Gullfoss. Meet us in the evening at Drumbó Tent Basecamp where we relax in these great surroundings.
Day 2: Rafting – Þjorsádalur – Landmannalaugar Basecamp
From Drumbó we will take you in the morning for a rafting tour on the fun river Hvitá.This glacial river has a perfectly balanced mix of serene canyons and adrenaline pumping waves and rapids – an adventure suitable for everybody. After the rafting your road trip continues and you drive through the scenic valley of Þjórsádalur overlooking vulcano Hekla. Here we hit the southern highlands and its dusty dirt roads – good to have the 4×4. Final destination is Landmannalaugar – a place surrounded by colorful rhyolite mountains, where both hot and cold springs emerge from the earth to provide you with excellent natural bathing pools. You stay overnight at our highland basecamp in Landmannalaugar.
Day 3: Landmannalaugar
Be active today and let the highland winds freshen up your system. Have a look in our arctic road book and you will find several hikes we recommend. Not feeling like hiking? Take the car for an off-roading adventure on the small and challenging dirt tracks or just relax in the geothermal hotpots close to the camping site. Same overnight.
Day 4: Fjallabak Nydra – Skaftafell
You leave this highland pearl behind and drive the scenic highland track Fjallabak Nyðra. Have a look at the fire gorge Eldgjá on your way – a volcanic fissure, 30 kilometres in length. This is also a great place to take a short hike. Coming out of the highlands into the south the coastal road to Skaftafell offers a magnificent view of massive snow covered glacier tops and the ocean. You destination will be our famous tent city right in the heart of Skaftafell National Park.
Day 5: Glacier hike & Boat tour on the glacier lagoon
You will leave your car today behind and visit the most breathtaking and inspiring nature that Vatnajökull National Park has to offer with our glacier guides. We gear up with crampons and iceaxes and wander along the Fjallsárlón glacier lagoon and then hike on to the glacier tongue itself, Fjallsjökull, where you will find yourself surrounded by spectacular ice formations and crevasses. We also take a boat ride on the world famous Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon where you will sail among enormous icebergs with Europe’s largest glacier in the background. From here we take you back to Skaftafell basecamp – the perfect place to relax after a day full of adventures.
Day 6: Skaftafell – South Coast – Reykjavik
Time to hit the road again. Road number 1 will take you back to Reykjavik but there is plenty to see on the way. Stop at the village Vík and take a walk on its black sand beach with the basalt formations Reynisdrangar reaching out of the ocean. Search for puffins on the cliffs of Dyrhólaey, photograph the rainbow in front of waterfall Skógafoss (a little luck is needed)and walk behind waterfall Seljalandsfoss. In the early evening you arrive back in Reykjavik, where the varied cultural life of our capital is waiting.
