Mountain biking adventure tour on the 1000 River Road and Reykjadalur Valley in the Hengill Area.
Trip difficulty 3 out of 5 possible. Rated: Challenging
We start this amazing mountain bike trip from the geothermal power plant Hellisheiðarvirkjun and head up the mountain towards the 1000 rivers road. We will pass several geothermal power holes and see the intricate technology Iceland uses to heat its houses in an environmentally friendly manner. The 1000 rivers road is properly named since we will cross the river many times as we pedal towards the famous Reykjadalur (Steam valley). Down there hot water rushes down the slopes of the mountain range and creates the ideal place to relax in an untouched natural hot stream. The valley also has an amazing abundance of geothermal springs and you will witness every thing from small gurgling melting pots to vibrant super heated pools of water. After strolling along these wonders of nature we ride all the way back down into the town of Hveragerði.
