Challenging Day Tour
: available directly from Reykjavík in Iceland.Guide to Client Ratio
This is one of our all time classic day tours from Reykjavík. It will take you sea kayaking on either the beautiful Hvalfjörður fjord or the historic Þingvallavatn Lake. We use these two locations because sea kayaking tours are very weather dependent, and by using these two fantastic locations we can minimize cancelations due to wind. Our kayaks are stable and easy to use and we only go in very small groups, never more then 6 kayakers for every guide. There is no need for prior kayaking experience since your BCU 4 star certified kayak guide* will teach you the technique on location.
Our two locations are very different. The Hvalfjörður fjord (literal translation: Whalefjord) is a deep fjord, created by the ice age glaciers, with steep 1000 meter tabletop mountains reaching for the sky. This is where the allied troops hid their submarines and battle ships during WWII and here we are paddling on the North Atlantic Ocean. The Þingvallavatn lake (literal translation: Parliament Fields Lake) is Iceland´s biggest natural lake. It is located in the tectonic rift valley between America and Europe, surrounded by volcanoes, lava fields and green pastures. Although the locations they are different, both are exceptional choices for kayaking. Please note:
On the Fjord Serenity your guide will choose whether to go to Þingvellir or Hvalfjörður based up on the current weather and weather forecast. Sea kayaking tours on open water like the Fjord Serenity are dependent on weather conditions and wave forecast. Like on all outdoor adventures we reserve the right to cancel or change you itinerary at any point with your safety in mind. If your kayaking tour is canceled by us before it starts you will receive a FULL refund and our assistance in finding another adventure to fill your day.
Also note: Due to limited capacity and our small groups policy this tour sells frequently we recommend that you book this tour well in advance.
The Fjord Serenity is included in the great value adventure holiday:

* What is a BCU 4 star kayak guide?
What is kayaking?
Successful guiding performance at this level indicates that the guide has the personal skill level
and leadership ability required to lead a group of paddlers, on short (6 to 8 miles, of at least
3 hours paddling), single or multi-day journeys in a moderate tidal water environment with
winds not exceeding Beaufort Force 4. The BCU 4 Star Leader has the skills and judgement
to select appropriate environments for paddlers with a range of experience.
The BCU 4 Star Leader Award is a leadership award and not a coaching award. What does that mean in English? Simply that we only employ the best sea kayak guides you can find.
Our sea kayaks are the best open water kayaks available. They are closed boats so no water gets into them (they are not canoes). You glide peacefully through the water, powered by your paddle strokes. You will be wearing a lifejacket; a specially made dry jacket and wet pants that will keep you warm even in the harshest off circumstances. Almost anyone can go on a kayak tour with us in Iceland. Our kayak guides will teach you everything you need to know. They will also paddle with you and are always in reach if anything should happen or if you simply have a question about the scenery!Disclaimer

1. Is there a minimum/maximum age group you allow to join?
For sea kayaking day trips there is a 16 year minimum (if accompanied by a guardian), for the multi day kayaking trips the minimum is 18 years.
For most other activities we offer the age limit is 14 years (e.g. caving, glacier hiking, ice climbing, river rafting, snorkeling).
Depending on the trip you would like to join there are set minimums and guaranteed departures, you can see these in the details sections of each trip. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact us.
2. How experienced do you have to be?
For the kayaking day trip no previous experience is required as our professional guide will teach the technique on location.
For the Langisjór Kayak Expedition
no previous experience is required, but you should be in a relatively good physical shape to undertake the trip.
On our extended open sea kayak tour it is recommended that you have some kayaking experience and being in relatively good physical shape and a keen spirit of adventure is also good to have.
3. How fit do you have to be?
Our day trips are on the whole pretty easy going and most people can do it. But as said before, sea kayaking is an outdoor sport set in the Icelandic NatureThe multi day trips are more challenging, with more paddling, hiking and on some trip you will have to help make camp and more. The average person is a relatively good shape should have few problems (would reconsider if you are seriously out of shape)
4. How far & duration do you paddle?
On our day trips: 2-4 hours of paddling, how far you paddle depends on wind, swell, waves, weather, ability of the members of your group etc.
On the Langisjór Expedition tour you paddle for 2 days (+1 day hike and for transport) on a sheltered lake up in the Icelandic highlands.
On the Island Hopping in Iceland sea kayak tour you paddle for 3,5-4 days (+1 day hike & 1 day for transport) on the Breidafjordur bay in West Iceland.
5. Will there be a guide?
All our kayaking tours are operated by experienced and certified professional 4 star BCU sea kayak guides (and same goes for any tour we operate for that matter).
6. What kind of kayaks do you use?
We use top of the line plastic sea kayaks.
7. Are the kayaks stable?
Our kayaks are very stable and easy to use
8. Can the kayaks tip over?
Yes they can tip over although they are very stable. If they tip over the guide has the necessary equipment and ability to quickly tip them over again.
If the kayaks tip over participants do not have to worry too much, all participants get life jackets and neoprene suits so they will stay warm if they fall in.
To minimize the risk of this happening it is up to our guides to make the final decision whether or not the groups head out to sea. We never, and I underline NEVER, head out if weather is bad. All our trips are subject to weather and we reserve the right to change or cancel any trip if we feel that customer safety is compromised.
9. Can the kayaks sink?
No they can´t sink. How ever if they tip over they will fill with water, your guide will help you to easily empty it out before you
10. Can anything be taken in the kayaks ie camera, are they permitted?
You can take things in the kayaks (e.g. waterproof camera would be a good idea). Not recommended to take too much in the day trip (as there is really no need for it) but you can fit all necessary equipment you need for the multi day tours in the kayaks.
11. Do kayakers need any special clothing or equipment?
For the day trip bring warm outdoor clothing, i.e. fleece sweater and pants, change of clothing and swimwear. Similar for the multi day tours, but you simply need more of it and other stuff to! Click here to view our sea kayaking equipment list for extended trip.
12. How big is the group size?
Day trips max 12 people
Multi day 4-8 people
13. I can´t swim... Is that a problem?
Although you don´t need to "swim" while sea kayaking, we recommend that you can. The reason for that is people that can´t swim tend to panic when they are in the water. You have to be comfortable with floating in water.
